Liverpool have revealed that club legend Alan Hansen is currently 'seriously ill' in hospital – with Gary Lineker leading the tributes.

The Reds released a statement on their website confirming their former captain is currently in hospital and "seriously ill." The club added they are in contact with the 68-year-old's family and will "provide our support at this difficult time". Lineker was quick to pay tribute to Hansen, after working alongside the former Liverpool captain for over a decade on . He posted on X: "Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family."

A club statement read: "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital.
"A defender of the utmost elegance, Hansen’s outstanding raft of honours across a 14-year spell with the Reds – he joined from Partick Thistle in 1977 – included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups.
"‘Jocky’, as he was known by teammates, is in the top 10 for all-time appearances for the club having played 620 matches, and the Scottish centre-back also served as Liverpool skipper for four seasons.
"The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family.
"We will provide any further updates as we receive them in due course, and we request that the Hansen family’s privacy is respected at this time."
TRIBUTES FLOOD IN
Tributes quickly flooded in for Hansen. Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge posted on X: "All our thoughts has ex lfc players are with Alan (Jockey)Hansen and his family let’s hope he can pull through his illness.ynwa."
Liverpool's bitter rivals Everton tweeted: "Get well soon, Alan. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones."
Former referee Keith Hackett also wrote a message of support on social media. He posted: "Sorry to learn that Liverpool's Alan Hansen is currently in intensive carer. Such a wonderful player and a delight to refere. I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery."
Ex- Crystal Palace forward Mark Bright, who played against Hansen on many occasions, tweeted: "Wishing the LFC legend Alan Hansen a speedy recovery, love and thoughts with Janet, Lucy & Adam."
HANSEN A TRUE LIVERPOOL ICON
Hansen is a Liverpool icon. During his 620 appearances for the club, the Scot won eight First Division titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups. After his career, he was a regular pundit on Match of the Day from 1992-2014. Football fans around the world will be hoping he makes a full recovery.
