Werder Bremen’s Mesut Ozil has been catching the eye with his displays this season, and this summer could see a bidding war commence over the 21-year-old German midfielder.
Already linked with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City, the influential playmaker scored 10 goals and provided an impressive 19 assists for his side. The man who was signed to replace Diego after his sale to Juventus has ensured that they haven’t missed the Brazilian one bit. In fact he has already been nicknamed Der neue Diego (the new Diego) by fans thanks to his almost identical play. Yet whilst the Brazilian has had an awful season for Juve, Ozil has flourished for Bremen and could be one of Germany’s stars at this year’s World Cup.
Ozil’s main qualities are his range of passing and awareness, he is very direct with his approach play and has a great burst of pace. He has however been criticised for being too lightweight, but that can easily be solved by a few sessions in the gym.
He is very highly rated by his team mates, Brazilian centreback Naldo has said about Ozil: “Mesut can decide a match on his own. He’s quick-thinking and the ball just seems to stick to his feet, like Messi.”
When Germany’s Under-21 team won the European Championship last year, Mesut Ozil was without a doubt their star player and every attacking move they made went through him. He impressed so much that following the Under-21’s victory, he was immediately called up to the full German squad for their World Cup qualifying matches.
He will be looking to have a big impact for Germany in the World Cup, Ozil has said: “It would be a dream come true to win the World Cup with Germany. We’ve certainly got the potential to go all the way.”
Thanks to his already growing reputation is likely to be one of those players whose price tag will dramatically raise should he have a good tournament. It is likely that he will begin games on the bench but there is no reason that he can’t become a starter if he puts in good performances when he is given the chance.
Out of the sides he has been linked with, Liverpool could probably do with him the most, but they better act fast otherwise the competition for Ozil’s signature will definitely heat up, come this summer.
